"No coarse hand of progress will ever tear from Mallacoota and its surroundings the mystic beauty which clings to it like an enchanted veil, showing under the soft transparency of sky and air a lovliness amongst the rarest in picturesque Australia."
E.J. Brady, The Overlander 1926
Mallacoota is a small picturesque seaside fishing village situated half way between Melbourne and Sydney and is within a few hours drive of the ACT (around 7 hrs from Melbourne ). Completely surrounded by national park the area is listed as a Unesco World Biosphere. Local attractions include quality lake and estuary fishing, surfing, sailing, swimming, bush walking, mountain biking, kayaking, boating and beach exploring. The township is small and has a range of cafes, restaurants and take away stores. Meals are available at the hotel, Tide restaurant and the golf club. Two fully equipped licensed supermarkets are open daily as is the bakery... 2 service stations with fuel available for vehicles and boats. One has a workshop with car mechanics. There is a fully licensed restaurant called the "Tide"(this closes during the off season) and also bistro at the hotel, and meals at the golf club (which incidentally has 18 holes). There are also 2 cafes, one takeaway and a noodle bar (she makes great coffee too!) There are two large, fully equipped supermarkets. Other services: A medical centre with 2 doctors, bush nurse, chemist, gift shop, sports store, bait & tackle , bank of Bendigo, also the Bank of Melbourne at Food way ( in store), a hole in the wall for other banks outside Picket’s Gift Shop, a post office with Commonwealth agency and Efpos in most stores. We have a hardware, 2 service stations, an auto electrician, welder, and assorted trades, marine place, 2 gift shops, assorted galleries, 3 boat hire places, 2 cruise boats with guides, assorted wilderness tours, kayak, canoe and sailboat etc hire, video shop with video & DVD player hire, 2 hairdressers, butcher, 2op shops, a newsagent and a bakery. One hour up the coast at Eden there is a very large shopping area with the things we don't have such as dentist, jeweller, cinema (at Merimbula, 15 min on) and vet. There are also such things as adventure parks and horse riding available here. Mallacoota has the most amazing beaches, with safe swimming for toddlers up to waves for experienced board riders. There are 2 salt water lakes and assorted rivers and creeks. If you require further information on anything there is the Parks office and an information centre on the main wharf. More information on this area from www.parksvic.com.au Croajingolong National Park . We swell to up to 18,000 people during the Chris tmas holidays. Most of us live in Mallacoota for the lifestyle rather than wanting to grow rich overnight!! The place is one of unspoilt beauty and a magnet for artists, poets(my parents for instance) musicians and people who love nature. There is controversy about an intended ocean access boat ramp, which looks as though it will go ahead. Fine for businesses and real Estate agents, hope it is tastefully done. very sensitive area(in more ways than one) The ramp will, no doubt, attract visitors to the Marine Park and ocean fishermen.
